Banking plays a key role in the move toward inclusion in India, Indonesia, and Nigeria. In recent years, India has made a major effort to get a bank account for every citizen. In 2016, nearly two-thirds of citizens (62%) held bank accounts, and active account holders jumped 11 points to 40% of the adult population from 2014 to 2016. In Bangladesh and the East African countries, the relevance of banks to those taking the first steps toward inclusion is being tested with mobile money complementing and competing in the marketplace.
